What age can kids start martial arts?
Junior karate starts at age 6 and boxing at age 7. Some conditions apply depending on the child and the class, so have a chat with us first on 0409 858 304 and we will point you at the right session.
How much do classes cost?
Karate, boxing training and boxing fitness are all $100 per month paid upfront, or $20 per class paid before the class starts. Personal training and school programs are priced separately.
Do I need to be fit or experienced to start?
No. Every class takes complete beginners, and most people who walk in have never trained before. You are taught the basics from the first session and you move at your own pace.
Are the coaches qualified?
Yes. Coaches are qualified through Martial Arts Australia, and boxing coaching is nationally accredited. Instructors delivering school programs are qualified and insured.
Do you run classes for schools?
Yes. Shen Academy travels across the North West Coast from Devonport to Smithton and Queenstown running karate, boxing, kickboxing, MMA and self-defence sessions for primary through to college. Fees start from $150 per session.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable clothes you can move in and bare feet or clean training shoes depending on the class. You do not need a uniform, gloves or wraps for a first session — sort that out once you know you are staying.
Do I need to book, or can I just turn up?
Call or text 0409 858 304 first. Class numbers and times shift around school terms and public holidays, and a quick call means you turn up to a session that is actually running and suits you.
Can adults start with no experience at all?
Yes, and most do. Adult karate, boxing fitness and self-defence all take complete beginners. You learn the basics properly before anything is asked of you.
Can I train with my kids?
Families train here regularly. Junior and senior karate run on the same nights, so parents and children can train back to back, and family or private sessions can be arranged.
Is there sparring, and is it compulsory?
Sparring is part of boxing and MMA for those who want it, and part of karate at the appropriate level. Nobody is put in to spar before they are ready, and boxing fitness has no contact at all.
Do you run competitions or gradings?
Karate students grade as they progress. Boxers and MMA athletes who want to compete are coached for it, and those who only want the training and the fitness are just as welcome.
What is the difference between boxing training and boxing fitness?
Boxing training is the full club session — technique, bag and pad work, conditioning and sparring for those who want it, running 90 minutes. Boxing fitness is 45 minutes of the same technical work and conditioning with no contact.
Who runs the MMA classes?
The Duelling Dragons MMA program is run by Franki and Callan. Contact them directly on 0436 026 111 for class details and enrolment.
Do you offer private or one-on-one training?
Yes. Personal training runs for individuals, couples and private groups, covering powerlifting, body sculpting, strength training, kickboxing and boxing, karate and self-defence, and general fitness. Spots are limited and pricing is on request.
Where exactly do I find you?
The venue is at 63A Mount Street in the Burnie CBD, Tasmania 7320. It is a private training hall rather than a walk-in gym, so call or text 0409 858 304 before your first visit.
Do you take students from outside Burnie?
Yes. Students travel in from Somerset, Wynyard, Penguin, Ulverstone and around the North West Coast. School programs run as far as Devonport, Smithton and Queenstown.
