What self-defence actually is
Most of self-defence happens before anything physical. Where you stand, what you notice, how much distance you keep, how you carry yourself, and how early you leave. That gets taught here alongside the physical skills, because it is the part that works most often.
The physical side is drilled the way everything else is here — slowly at first, then with a partner who is actually resisting, because a technique you have only done against a cooperative partner is not a technique you own.
What a session looks like
- Awareness, distance and positioning
- Recognising a situation early and getting out of it
- Escapes from grabs and holds
- Simple, repeatable strikes that work under stress
- Defending while off balance or on the ground
- Drilling under pressure, not just demonstration
Who it suits
- Anyone who wants practical skills without joining a full martial arts program
- Women and teenagers wanting confidence moving around independently
- Workplaces and community groups — booked as a workshop
- Schools across North West Tasmania — see school programs
- Parents wanting their kids taught awareness alongside technique

神 Questions
Worth knowing
before you start
Do I have to join a martial arts class to learn self-defence?
No. Self-defence can be taught as private training or as a one-off workshop. It is also built into the regular karate and boxing classes if you would rather train ongoing.
What age is self-defence suitable for?
All ages. Content is pitched at the group, so a session for children looks different to one for adults.
Can you run a self-defence session for our group or workplace?
Yes. Sessions are customised to the group's size, age and available time. Call 0409 858 304 to discuss it.
Do you go into schools?
Yes. Self-defence workshops run into schools across the North West Coast from Devonport to Smithton and Queenstown, from $150 per session.
Is it physically demanding?
It can be scaled either way. A workshop is accessible to anyone, and ongoing training in the classes gets you fit as a side effect.
